Design and renovation of an apartment in Ymittos.
Dimitris works permanently abroad but visits Greece very regularly.
His house is in an old detached house in Ymittos and he wanted to renovate it so that he can enjoy it when he eventually comes back.
He was quite stressed about the venture as he would be away for the duration of the renovation. Last year we had renovated his nephew’s apartment in Ilioupoli so his recommendations led Dimitri to us.
The flat is quite big (90 square metres) but it seemed much smaller because the space was divided in many different rooms and felt like a maze.
Several square metres were wasted in non-functional spaces with limited natural lighting and ventilation such as an entrance hall and a large corridor running through the house. Dimitris also wanted to get a second bedroom in the flat because in the 90sqm there was only one bedroom.
We experimented quite a bit with the designs, discussed even more with Dimitris and ended up tearing down almost all the walls separating the house in many small rooms. In the big space that was created we placed the kitchen, living, dining and office space. In the space of the former kitchen we created the second bedroom, which Dimitris really wanted.
Aesthetics
At this point we met Claudia, Dimitri’s partener. Italian, chic, assertive and she really new what was missing from their new home. It was LIGHT..
The windows were enlarged to add natural lighting during the day while we created a recessed ceiling, around the flat, with LED lights to get adjustable mood lighting at night.
For the floor of the apartment we chose wood effect artificial granite tiles, to create a warm look.
The kitchen has white cabinets and a wood effect bakelite counter in a similar shade to the floor tiles.
On the backsplash of the kitchen we installed tiles that look like old masonry walls.
We also created a home office side, with large built-in storage cabinets utilising the entrance area, giving it a functional use. We chose the colour white to blend in the composition with the rest of the space.
In the bedrooms we installed new wardrobes up to the ceiling, in white.
During the whole process of the renovation Dimitris was abroad and first saw the house when it was finished. His reaction when he opened the door was at least delightful to us.
